Big Data researcher to present success of video control plane architecture in improving Quality of Experience (QoE) for online video

SAN MATEO, CA.—December 11, 2013— Dr. Ion Stoica, Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer of Conviva, will be featured as a keynote speaker at the 20th International Packet Video Workshop. His keynote address will draw on his research at UC Berkeley and Conviva exploring the ability to improve video quality through a control plane architecture powered by real-time, big data technology.

Stoica’s presentation, “Improving Video Quality by Information Sharing,” will address the challenges of achieving and maintaining a high Quality of Experience (QoE) for viewers despite the rapidly increasing quantity of video traffic on the Internet. Stoica and his team at Conviva propose a video control plane architecture that takes actions to optimize video quality based on real-time information collected from a large global data set. By taking advantage of the intelligence provided by billions of video streams, this approach can continually improve the quality of each individual stream.

“Video traffic currently represents a significant portion of all Internet traffic and is projected to exceed 90% of total activity in the next five years,” said Stoica. “The findings of our experimental results are critical for content owners and publishers – a separate video controller puts them in control of the viewing experience for their premium content and enables them to face the challenges of delivering digital video without compromising quality.”

Conviva has implemented this video control plane architecture for leading publishers and content brands around the world. Stoica will discuss the results of this approach and its ability to improve the online viewing experience despite the underlying deficiencies of the current Internet and content delivery network (CDN) infrastructures for video delivery.

The 2013 International Packet Video Workshop is hosted by Cisco and will take place December 12-13th at the Cisco building in San Jose, CA. Stoica will present on Thursday, December 12th at 1:30 p.m. To learn more about the conference or register to attend, visit www.pv2013.itec.aau.at/.
