Conviva Co-Founder Stoica Lands ‘Test of Time’ Award from Global Technology Research Body

ACM Calls Chief Technology Officer’s Landmark Paper a ‘Vibrant and Useful Contribution’ a Decade Later

SAN MATEO, CA. – August 18, 2011 Demonstrating the lasting power of foundational technology research in building a thriving Internet industry, the ACM SIGCOMM body presented the prestigious ‘Test of Time’ award for 2011 to Dr. Ion Stoica, co-founder and chief technology officer of Conviva, Inc., at its annual conference.

Dr. Stoica joins Conviva Co-Founder, Dr. Hui Zhang, in winning the Test of Time award from the ACM this year. Both Stoica and Zhang will present their research and early vision of conquering long-time Internet evolution challenges at the annual ACM-SIGCOMM conference, August 15-19, 2011.

Published in 2001, Chord: A Scalable Peer-to-Peer Lookup Service for Internet Applications, has been deemed “an outstanding paper whose contents are still a vibrant and useful contribution today,” according to SIGCOMM. The SIGCOMM community consists of professional members representing scientists, engineers, educators and students. SIGCOMM brings together the industry and academia to tackle problems related to systems engineering and the architecture of computer and communication networks.

A panel of experts reviewed submissions and bestowed the award to the paper which Dr. Stoica, at the University of California at Berkeley, co-authored with Robert Morris, David Karger, Frans Kaashoek, and Hari Balakrishnan, all at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. This paper is available online along with other pivotal research papers authored by Stoica for SIGCOMM – and other research and technical bodies over the years.
